Seems like I’m getting a lot of traffic on “How to make Totoro cream puffs” from “boing boing.” I just want to say Domo Arigato to everyone! I feel extremely flattered by people’s positive comments, and it makes me so happy to see some people are saying how they can’t wait to make them. (And some of them have already made them! I’m asking their permission to post the images on my blog now…)

To show how much I appreciate everyone’s love for food, I give you Domo Arigato, Domo-kun marshmallow!

Non-bento #14: Domo-kun
Created and eaten on: 4/16/2009

This wasn’t something I had planned. I had left over marshmallows from when I made “meringue Mario mushroom”, and I’ve been thinking about using them to make something. I was playing with it tonight, and just decided to try making Domo-kun and see what would happen.
I dipped the marshmallows in melted chocolate, and put it in the fridge. I squeezed red icing onto wax paper, put it in the freezer, and when it was hard enough, I drew teeth with white icing on it and put it back in the freezer. When it was hard, I took it out, carefully took each mouth off wax paper, and put it on each Domo-kun. Then I melted darker chocolate and put eyes on him.

Some of them came out cute, but some came out pretty scary and creepy. I think it’s because you can see the red part of the mouth from the top and the sides on some of them. It made it look like a vicious monster with blood dripping teeth or something.
Store bought icing doesn’t get that hard, so it’s hard to make the mouth piece. I should’ve made my own icing, but I wasn’t planning on making a lot of Domo-kun tonight, so I just used icing from the tube. So this was more like an experiment, and I wasn’t sure whether I considered this as a non-bento food, but since I have no bento to blog today, why not? 😛

EDIT: My boyfriend snapped only a couple of pictures, because it was just an experiment. I’ll make sure to take more pictures when I make a batch of Domo-kun!

Domo-kun:
– marshmallow
– chocolate (regular and dark)
– red icing, white icing

These are so cute! I actually did make your yeast version of steamed pork buns, but haven’t uploaded the picts yet to put it on my blog. I’ll update you when they are there and put a link to your recipe.

p.s. My husband absolutely loved the steamed buns, and has been raving about them ever since. Definitely a new favorite.
