My boyfriend and I went to New York aquarium today. We watched fish, sharks, walruses, sea otters, penguins, the sea lion show, and the “4-D experience”. 4-D experience was cool but a bit short and confusing at some point. I heard a kid shouting “What is happening!?” during the show, which I found it pretty funny. (Read my boyfriend’s comic about our 4-D experience.)

Anyway, I was feeling lazy after we came back from the aquarium, so I just decided to do a how-to on the Domo-kun chocolate covered marshmallow.

[Domo-kun chocolate covered marshmallow]
– Marshmallow
– Two different kinds of chocolate, light and dark (doesn’t have to be baker’s chocolate, but baker’s chocolate I have is darker, so I
used baker’s chocolate for the darker chocolate)
– Red icing
– White icing
— toothpick
— wax paper
— pastry bag and tip or Wilton icing tube and tip attachment. (You can buy the attachments made for Wilton icing tube, and all you have to do is put it on the tube.) *I’m not sure if ziploc bag is suitable for this one, since the mouth and teeth are very small.

1. Boil water in a pot, and turn off the heat. Break chocolate into pieces and put them in a small bowl.

2. Put the bowl in the pot and melt chocolate. (Make sure the water doesn’t get into the bowl)
Tips: If you’re using regular chocolate, DO NOT HEAT IT UP TOO MUCH OR LET IT COOL DOWN ONCE IT’S MELTED. You cannot re-heat to melt the regular chocolate if it’s already melted once in high heat and hardened.

3. When the chocolate is all melted, dip marshmallow in the chocolate. (Keep the bowl in the hot water) I used a spoon and toothpick to roll the marshmallow in the chocolate.

4. Stick a toothpick in the top of the marshmallow, and put it on wax paper. Use another tooth pick to remove the toothpick (to avoid touching the chocolate), and put a little chocolate to cover the hole on the top. Put in the fridge until the chocolate hardens.

5. Once the chocolate is hard, take it out, remove them from the wax paper, and lay them on the side. Squeeze red icing in a rectangular shape onto each marshmallow. (I used the icing that you can buy tips to attach directly on the tube. This makes thing so much easier!)

6. Make the icing flat with a wet finger tip, and put it back in the fridge.

7. Once the icing is hard enough, squeeze a line of white icing on the top and bottom the red icing.

8. Using a wet toothpick, gently push down the white line of icing.

9. Melt dark chocolate, and using the back of a toothpick, put the chocolate on where the eyes are. (I used baker’s chocolate. They tend to look darker)

10. Chill them in the fridge for a while, and you’ve got Domo-kun waiting for you to eat him!

I don’t know if this is really a how-to, though. It looks simple, but very tedious, and it’s not really my kind of how-to. I wish I could’ve simplified the process more. Maybe you can substitute the red mouth part with Gummi tape?

Finally all my left over marshmallows are gone! Now I can make my own marshmallows… 😀
